BTWXT II: Anne Lindberg + Olivia Schreiner

Carrie Secrist Gallery is happy to announce the second project in our series “CSG BTWXT” at our temporary gallery space, located at 1637 W. Chicago Ave in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. BTWXT II will feature work by New York-based gallery artist Anne Lindberg and Chicago-based artist Olivia Schreiner. It will open January 6 and run through February 25 with an opening reception on January 6 from 5-8PM. 

Anne Lindberg’s presentation, titled Afterimage, explores the visceral elements of color as it relates theory, abstraction, and the proximity of the viewer’s experience. With a binding interest in color theory, Lindberg looks to the writings of Emily Noyes Vanderpoel, Mary Gartside and the experiments of Joseph Albers to investigate color complementariness, which, in concept, implies a shift in time and space. In her abstract line drawings, the smashing together of colors such as blue and yellow creates a “simultaneous contrast” which alters our perception of what color is (what is yellow and what is blue?). Exploring the ideas of color as an “intangible essence” interplays with the material resonance of the colored pencil and graphite. Several of the works utilize multiple panels in composite to activate the play of space and color adjacencies. Lindberg’s interest in the emotional and visual powers of color generates arresting compositions of urgency and turbulence, quietude and harmony. The drawings collapse divisions between complementary colors, bringing forth a mysterious indeterminate state of individual and blended colors.

Afterimage opens alongside the release of Anne Lindberg’s new book with Dürer Editions (Dublin, Ireland). The publication includes work from the last ten years, interweaving images of immersive site-specific installations with drawings and four essays. Books will be available for purchase at the gallery. A Collector’s Edition (edition of 12) with an original drawing and slipcase with the book is also available, as are a limited number of signed copies of the book. The shifting of time and space also appears in Olivia Schreiner’s new paintings. Through an ever-present search for a precise combination of light, color, form and texture, the element of perspective takes on new meaning literally and figuratively. Here, it is the translation of light, be it fireworks or a glowing window at night, that subjectively re-purpose our relationship to its source and subsequently introduce varying degrees of disorientation. These atmospheric landscape paintings are sourced from photographs that Schreiner takes throughout her day. The translation of the photographic image into a painted canvas develops a pronounced mediated layer by introducing depth of field, distortion, focus/lack of focus, odd light effects and cropping. The autobiographical nature of these artworks amplify the light in the dark, serving as a useful metaphor for the times we live in.

Anne Lindberg makes immersive installations and drawings that tap a non-verbal physiological landscape of body and space, provoking emotional, visceral and perceptual responses. Her work generates fundamental questions about time, causality and sequence as it speaks to the vicissitudes of human experience. Anne Lindberg’s recent institutional exhibitions include Everson Museum of Art, Figge Art Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, Thomas Cole Historic Site, John Michael Kohler Art Center, Manitoga / The Russel Wright Design Center, University of Minnesota Regis Center for the Arts and the River Valley Arts Collective at the Thornwillow Press.

Olivia Schreiner received an MFA from Northwestern University and a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.  In between she spent several years in Philadelphia where she was a member of the cooperative gallery Vox Populi and Project Coordinator at The Fabric Workshop and Museum.  She was recently included in the group exhibition “With a Capital P: Selections by Six Painters at the Elmhurst Art Museum” in Elmhurst, IL. Her most recent solo exhibition at Tiger Strikes Asteroid Chicago was listed in New City Art as one of the Top Five exhibits to see in May 2018.  Schreiner’s work is an exploration of landscape through the patterns of light and dark that she discovers in her daily life.  The results are ephemeral surfaces built up with thin washes and bold instances of organic and architectural forms. She currently resides in Oak Park and paints in her garage studio.
