Andrew Holmquist: Marco (Polo)
September 7—November 9, 2013
Carrie Secrist Gallery presents Andrew Holmquist Marco (Polo) on view from September 7 to October 12, 2013.
Please join the gallery for a reception for the artist on Friday, September 20 from 5 to 8 PM in conjunction with the Expo Chicago Art Fair.
In his second solo exhibition with the gallery, Andrew Holmquist presents new painting, sculpture, print work and installation that reveal the depth and dynamism of his studio practice. Known for rich pictures formed with copious ribbons of paint situated within a layered physical space, Holmquist further investigates the medium of painting in Marco (Polo). Raw, large-scale brushstrokes explore personal identity through a sunlit palette reminiscent of summer days spent poolside.
New sculptures in Marco (Polo) extend from and mimic Holmquist’s painting technique. In one new structure, a steel framework coated in lemon yellow pigment, straight and contour lines echo manicured paint drips. Formal yet playful, Holmquist’s steel bonds expand his brushstrokes to the third dimension.
In addition, Holmquist’s consideration of illustrative technique and painterly lushness translate to his human-scale archival digital prints. In six scenic images, a bold violet tone overshadows cyan and magenta hues to create depth. Floating abstractions of male limbs, kickboards, and beach towels further memorialize the pool to underscore notions of freedom and self-discovery.
Finally, Holmquist includes a projected light installation in a magenta tonal spectrum. As hot pink light transposes the space at varying intervals, it forms an enveloping aura. The viewer thus enters one of the artist’s scenes and encounters the enigmatic qualities of abstraction so prevalent in his paintings, sculptures, and prints.
